    Horsburgh Lighthouse

Posted in Fishing, Hobbies by decem

The tower and light was ready for operation by 1851. A public meeting with British merchants. Captain James Horsburgh was well regarded, and the lighthouse was constructed by the British Straits Settlement, the lighthouse has always been administered and maintained from Singapore although it is located some 18 nautical miles beyond Singapore’s territorial water limit. There had been plenty of shipwrecks since the 1800 century. Can’t imagine how was it really like living back 200 years ago. It has always been a good place for fishing, yet discussed almost in all of the fishing forums in Singapore, about the fish popularity, i would say of course had decreased in large numbers.

Unlike the past, maybe 20 years back atleast there hadn’t been too much of bottom trolling of species, weren’t had demolished most areas of the seabeds and corals stuffs. So it may seemed pretty bad for these days.

For small group of anglers like us, a 60 feet ship of approximately 13 men capacity will have each of our 40qt capacity cooler aka icebox filled. I would say this is mentioned for good water conditions, good spots and good skipper only. Otherwise it could be a different experience.

nelayana1.gifOur 2nd trip to the Nelayana charter, this time she strokes further. 2days and 2nights offshore fishing, having a few familiar faces sharing the excitement together. Too many lines underneath, too many of us too busy, soon enough we’ve got used of the surprises. And 4 edible meals were served for each day, ate well but slept unwell. Actions happened all time, and our only best to rest time were the times when the boat propellers is revolving for the next spot.

The final night was the most exciting. Everyone were on their own position with their best gears readily, preparing for the last shreds of shipwrecks battle. And main target are snappers. So about 10-20 yards away from the wrecked ship, the method is, to let the bottom current sweeps the appropriate size sinker towards the exact spot which the stern of the ship is to be facing it. As it will be much spacious for all the anglers to fit at the rear.

We all chafed for about 4 hours, more beers and cheers. And the snappers that were landed on board were mostly the incredible sizes that I’ve ever seen. One by one they were all choked up and delivered into the main icebox.

I have to admit that i had finally understand why fishing is consider as a sport, rather than interest. Because some of the fishes are really tough and rough, and i had never used so much strength to get a fish before. think about it, the tide current, the sinker plus a big fish is depending on your gears and energy in order for a great landing. So aggressive, so unbelievable and amazing.

What an experience to learn, a theory to understand and it’s a memorable trip indeed. Even then, the worst thing to do ever after a trip is to dragged a box full of fishes back home. Clean them, pack them up into the chiller but allow one to be ready for dinner. And eat what you’ve caught knowing it’s worth going through the tough and adverse circumstances.
