Kelong All Night Long

dogsDogs were barking as we approached the floating platform that was made of hard compact fibrous substance of trees. Stiff, but clumsy, so we had to coordinate our steps with the waves through a stairway to the kelong hall, where fishermen eats and sleep almost half their lives. Which to me, is quite morbid though.

The kelong has a size of a basketball court. Imagine wooden interior parts of a building that depends on several timbers planted under the dept of 30meters down the sea. It’s indeed an admirable piece of architectural.

It was pouring the whole night, causing a cold ambient to an likeable event. Worst still, no response from beneath. So we had to occupy our time loitering and watching tv shows. We then slept for a while and later woke up to see bright light pouring in from the side window. Assuming that the sun has rise, i walked out to the balcony and realised that it’s a good time for feeding. So i hooked on a live squid and let it be taken down the dept by the sinker.

Just when i walked away, an unusual noise swapped away my thoughts on uric. The rod was nodding and nibbling. So i had to react to it fast and grab hold of the chance. But i was too slow that either the opponent hide into the cove, or it escaped trapping my sinker. Because the reel was stucked. And that always happen when you are not expecting a fish. So it’s either you stay put to its impatient and flee or force the line to snap. I intended to wait for a little while.

You might not know, sometimes this method is a waste of time and a loss of opportunities for another try. But for this my choice was the right of way and later on i brought up a 800g Cuban jack (Alectis ciliaris).

It brings excitement but we left afterwards realising it’s gonna rain again. Well it was fun, though we considered it as a visit than a fishing trip. Moreover we planned to have a kelong BBQ session next time. Those who are interested can contact us!cuban jack
